| TASKS The first two specifically relate to sci-tech: (1) Keep science and technology growing, especially in the fundamental powers areas. (2) Establish colonies beyond earth and beyond the solar system. We will never discover some crucial aspects of the universe, the fundamental powers, or even of ourselves if we remain confined to our earthly crib. The remaining three tasks concern adjusting rationally to our growing powers: (3) Establish a sustainable interaction with the environment. An increasingly degraded environment will make reaching Calousia increasingly costly, difficult and uncertain. (4) Reduce global population. Reliable reports show our population already too large for a sustainable environment. We want higher living standards for all (see #5, below), but the more they rise, the more resources each individual uses, and so the smaller our population must be. (5)
Establish a wealthy, highly educated world population. We will reach Calousia
much faster with this kind of society than with an impoverished, illiterate
one. The wealthy one can amply support sci-tech growth; the poor one cannot
even support itself and draws resources away from the advance.
